How to Play Euchre

Euchre is the fast-paced Midwest classic. A trick-taking card game for 4 players in teams of 2, played with only 24 cards. Learn the rules, trump strategy, and loner calls.

What You'll Need

A standard deck with only the 9s, 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces — 24 cards total. Four players split into two teams of two, sitting across from each other.

Card Rankings

Euchre has a unique ranking system. In the trump suit, the highest card is the Jack of trump (Right Bower), followed by the Jack of the same color (Left Bower), then A, K, Q, 10, 9 of trump. In non-trump suits, cards rank normally: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9.

Example: If hearts is trump, the Jack of Hearts is the highest card in the game. The Jack of Diamonds (same color) becomes the second highest and is considered part of the trump suit.

Dealing

The dealer gives each player 5 cards in groups of 2 and 3 (or 3 and 2). The remaining 4 cards form a kitty, with the top card turned face-up. This card determines potential trump.

Calling Trump

Starting left of the dealer, each player can either "order it up" (accept the face-up card's suit as trump) or pass. If a player orders it up, the dealer picks up that card and discards one.

If everyone passes, the card is turned down, and players go around again naming any other suit as trump. If no one calls trump in the second round, the dealer is "stuck" and must name trump (in many house rules).

Playing Tricks

The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible. The highest card of the led suit wins unless trump is played. The team that wins the most tricks (3 or more out of 5) scores points.

Scoring

  • 3 or 4 tricks — 1 point for the calling team
  • All 5 tricks (march) — 2 points for the calling team
  • Euchred (calling team takes fewer than 3) — 2 points for the defending team
  • Loner (one player goes alone and takes all 5) — 4 points

First team to 10 points wins.

Going Alone

If you're confident in your hand, you can declare "alone" when calling trump. Your partner sits out, and you play all 5 tricks solo. If you take all 5, your team gets 4 points instead of 2.

Tips & Strategy

Count trump. There are only 7 trump cards in play (including the Left Bower). Knowing how many are out helps you decide when to lead trump. Lead trump early if you have strong trump — pull their trump out so your off-suit winners are safe. Don't order it up light. You need to take 3 tricks or you get euchred for 2 points against you.

The dealer advantage: As dealer, you get to pick up the turned card, giving you 6 cards to choose 5 from. This is a significant advantage — be more aggressive calling trump as dealer.
