What You'll Need
- Four or more players sitting in a circle
- A table everyone can reach and drum on
- Drinks in front of every player
Setup
Sit in a circle. Every player invents their own hand sign, then shows it around the table once so everybody has seen it. That single pass is the only time anybody gets to study the signs, which is why Thumper punishes people who show up late.
Once the signs are around, everyone starts drumming the table. The drumming never stops while a round is live.
How to Play
Starting the Chain
The first player throws their own sign, then somebody else's. That names the next player.
Passing It On
The player who was named fires back with their own sign, then a new one, and it keeps rolling around the table. Your sign first, then theirs, every single time.
Breaking the Chain
Hesitate, miss your cue, or throw the wrong sign, and you drink. The drumming starts over from the beginning.
The Twist
The drumming gets faster every round, which is what turns an easy memory game into a hard one. And when someone shouts what's the name of the game?, the whole table thunders back: Thumper.
Winning
Nobody wins Thumper. The chain breaks, somebody drinks, the drumming restarts, and the tempo climbs again.
Tips and Strategy
- Make your sign distinctive. Two players with similar signs guarantees confusion, and the confusion always costs somebody a drink.
- Learn the signs either side of you first. The chain hits your neighbours most often.
- Throw your own sign clean. Most breaks are people rushing their own sign, not forgetting somebody else's.
- Watch the tempo. The drumming speeds up every round, so what worked in round one will not be fast enough by round five.
Make It a Party Night
Thumper needs nothing but a table, which makes it the game to reach for when the cups have all gone missing. More printable rules, scorecards and dare decks are in the Party Pack, and the free Party Starter Pack gets you going tonight.
Variations
Signs Reassigned
Everyone picks a new sign after each break. It resets the memory advantage of anyone who has been playing all night.
Slower Reset
Restart the drumming at the original tempo after a break rather than keeping the speed. It makes for a much longer game.
This game involves alcohol. Please drink responsibly. Intended for adults 21 and older in the United States.
