What You'll Need
- One standard 52-card deck
- Three to ten players sitting in a circle
- A drink in front of every player
- One person acting as dealer
Setup
Sit everyone in a circle where every player can see every other player, and put the deck in easy reach. Pick a dealer before the first flip. The dealer position matters later, because the dealer is the only player who ends a waterfall.
How to Play
Each player flips one card face-up, all at the same time, and the circle keeps going round. What you flipped decides what happens to you, and the suit is the only thing that matters.
Hearts — You Drink
Flip a Heart and you drink. There is no target, no argument, no way out of it. Hearts are the simplest card in the deck and the reason the game moves fast.
Diamonds — You Point
Flip a Diamond and you point at someone else at the table. They drink instead of you. This is the card that turns a card game into a social one, because everyone at the table remembers who pointed at them last round.
Clubs — You Make a Rule
Flip a Club and you invent a new rule that the whole table has to follow for the rest of the game. The rule stays live until somebody flips a Club and replaces it. Rules stack on top of each other, which is what makes late Waterfall rounds so much harder than early ones.
Spades — The Waterfall
This is the card the game is named for. Flip a Spade and everyone drinks continuously at the same time. Here is the catch: you cannot stop drinking until the player before you stops. The chain runs around the circle, and only the dealer decides when it ends. Sit next to a dealer with stamina and you will find out exactly how long a waterfall can last.
Winning
Waterfall has no winner. It ends when the deck runs out or when the table has had enough. The players who came out ahead are the ones who flipped Diamonds when the rules were stacked highest.
Tips and Strategy
- Position yourself away from the dealer. In a waterfall, the closer you sit after the dealer, the sooner you get to stop.
- Make rules you can survive. A Club rule applies to you too, and it stays live until the next Club.
- Track the rules out loud. Once three or four rules are stacked, half the drinking comes from rule breaks rather than from cards.
- Spread the Diamonds around. Point at the same person twice and you have picked a fight that lasts the rest of the deck.
Make It a Party Night
Waterfall runs off a single deck, so the only thing you really need is a table and a rule sheet somebody can point at when the Club rules start stacking up. More printable rules, scorecards and dare decks are in the Party Pack, and the free Party Starter Pack gets you going tonight.
Variations
Dealer Rotation
Pass the dealer position around the circle every time a Spade comes up, so no one player controls every waterfall.
Rules Written Down
Write each Club rule on paper as it is made. Arguing about what rule three actually was is how Waterfall games die.
