One song. One word. Endless chaos. Thunderstruck is the classic music drinking game built around AC/DC’s anthem — every time the word “thunder” is sung, the drink passes to the next player. Here’s how to run it without losing count.
What you need
- The song “Thunderstruck” and a speaker
- A drink for every player
- 3–12+ players in a circle
- (Optional) our printable rules card and turn tracker
How to play Thunderstruck
- Form a circle. Sit everyone in a circle and fill all the cups. Pick a starting player.
- Press play. Start the song from the beginning. Everyone listens closely for the word “thunder.”
- First “thunder”. When the first “thunder” is sung, the starting player begins drinking.
- Drink until the next “thunder”. They keep drinking continuously until the next “thunder,” which passes the turn to the next player clockwise.
- Ride it out. Keep passing on every “thunder” until the song ends. Anyone still standing wins.
Variations
- Beer only: Swap to a lighter drink — the choruses stack “thunder”s fast and can catch up to you.
- Two circles: Split a big group into two circles racing the same song for a team version.
- Reverse: Pass counter-clockwise, or reverse direction on every chorus to keep people guessing.
Pro tips
- Use a lighter drink — the back half of the song is relentless.
- Appoint a scorekeeper with our turn tracker so nobody argues who’s up.
- Only the exact word “thunder” counts — “thunderstruck” doesn’t pass the turn.
